Concept
The GARIS was installed at an experimental hall of the RILAC
facility. The separator was designed for collecting nuclear
reaction products produced in fusion-evaporation reaction with
high efficiency, separating them from intense primary beam,
with high background reduction rate.
One of the most interesting applications of the separator is
discovery of “superheavy element”. The production cross section
of these reactions tend to decrease in logarithmic manner with
the increase of atomic numbers of the nucleus. A smallness
of the production cross section is limiting farther research
of nuclei with grater atomic numbers. In order to overcome
the difficulty, one needs more intense primary beam from an
accelerator and recoil separator with high efficiency and with
high background reduction, the GARIS was installed at the RILAC
facility.
